Lightening hair can be tricky, even for the most experienced stylist. There’s so much to consider to ensure your clients get the glossy, lightened locks they want.
For each client, the hair type, its colour and condition must be understood. Then, you need to choose the best salon bleaches, peroxides and developers to get the desired lift, knowing exactly what each hair lightening product achieves, how it works, and the way they interact.
For your clients’ comfort, as well as efficiency, the products must also process quickly, ensuring the hair is nourished and undamaged. To minimise irritation, products shouldn’t produce strong chemical odours. Of course, price is a factor too.
Here, we share our round-up of the best salon bleaches, peroxides and developers in South Africa in 2025, and explain how products work.
Bleach powder for salons
Bleach is a chemical product used to lighten the natural hair colour, achieving looks from subtle highlights to bold transformations. Bleach powder has powerful lifting properties – measured on a level of one to 10 – and is the best choice for dramatic results and for lifting hair multiple levels.
To understand how it works…when hydrogen peroxide, the active ingredient in bleach, is applied to hair, it breaks down into oxygen and water. Oxygen molecules penetrate the shaft, interact with melanin (the pigment that determines colour), breaking it down and lightening it in the process.
Salon Fuels, our house brand, offers a range of effective and conditioning powder bleach solutions at very economical price points. The Powder Bleach Dust Free is a popular option that lifts four or five levels. For five or six levels, try the Violet Hi-Lift Bleach. The Violet Plex Powder Bleach can lift hair up to seven or nine levels (with heat applied). For sun-kissed effects, use the White Balayage Powder Bleach.
From innovative US brand Danger Jones comes the Powder Lightener with Bonding Complex, a cool-toned, pre-dusted powder lightener that lifts quickly without compromising the hair because of the Bonding Complex, which combines arginine and seaweed to significantly reduce damage.
To achieve the purest blonde from dark hair after just one application, try Italian brand KAYPRO’s Black To White Anti Yellow/Orange Bleaching Powder. It’s formulated with bamboo charcoal, hair is lightened without yellow or orange reflections, and is left in top condition.
Trusted brand Wella delivers the Blondor Plex 9 Powder Lightener, its most advanced formula for clean and clear blondes. The vegan treatment features Plex Technology for less hair breakage, lifts up to nine levels and is ideal for resistant hair types.
Professional cream bleach
Cream bleach offers a gentler alternative to powder bleach. It’s usually chosen for softer and controlled applications, such as root and foil work, and balayage, or when a client has a sensitive scalp. Despite being gentler, professional cream bleach gives significant lift.
KAYPRO’s Bleach 10 Carbon Anti Yellow Bleaching Cream lightens up to 10 levels, creating cool or ashy blondes in one step. BIG Professional’s Big Cream Bleach1+1 De-Coloration conditioning cream lightener lifts up to six levels, and is ideal for on-scalp bleaching treatments, as well as free-hand highlighting techniques.
High-quality cream developer
For the best results, bleaches are mixed with developers, which also contain hydrogen peroxide. Developer (aka developer solution or peroxide developer) works with bleach, or hair dye, to facilitate the chemical process and achieve a lightening effect or specific colour.
To achieve different levels of lift or colour intensity, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in developers varies. Usually, volumes range from 10 to 40, with 40 the most potent. It’s essential to choose the correct developer volume based on a client’s hair type and desired colour. The darker the hair, the higher the bleach lift number and stronger developer concentration needed to lighten it and avoid warm undertones.
Danger Jones Deluxe Cream Developer comes in five volumes and has a creamy consistency and active ingredients such as jojoba seed oil and aloe leaf juice to nourish hair. It’s designed to pair with Danger Jones Gloss Toners and Powder Lightener, and is 100% vegan, cruelty and gluten-free.
The Professional Cream Peroxide from our Italian-made tint me brand is ideally paired with its permanent colour range for exceptional quality at competitive prices.
Salon Fuels Cream Peroxide is a developer in five strengths that can be paired with bleach powder or colour.
Crazy Color Cream Developers are moisturising formulas that optimise colour and bleaching powder. Number six volume can be combined with Crazy Color Rapid Toners or permanent hair colour for saturated results with shine.
High-quality peroxides
Peroxide is a colourless, clear liquid found in many household products. Hydrogen peroxide is the most common type.
Hair products labelled as peroxide are usually developers, such as Truzone’s range of Cream Peroxide, an affordable, quality peroxide from the UK.
